Silicone vs. acrylic roof coatings: which one wins in Utah?

Acrylic coatings are cheaper per gallon and breathable. Silicone is pricier, but ponding-water rated and far less sensitive to UV breakdown. In Utah's high-altitude sun and snow-load cycles, the math almost always tips toward silicone.

The fast comparison

  • UV stability: Silicone holds up 2–3× longer at 4,200 ft elevation.
  • Ponding water: Silicone tolerates it; acrylic blisters under it.
  • Recoatability: Acrylic recoats with anything; silicone only recoats with silicone.
  • Cost: Acrylic ~30% cheaper installed.

Our default recommendation is GacoFlex S20 silicone for any flat roof where ponding can occur, and Henry 587 acrylic for steeper low-slope residential roofs with strong drainage.
